Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
Teddy Daniels, US Marshall, has just arrived at Shutter Island…home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to investigate the disappearance of a dangerous patient. Rachel Solando has been charged with murdering her children and has somehow escaped from her locked cell and is presumed to be loose somewhere on the island. Teddy Daniels, along with his partner, Chuck Aule, begin their search for Rachel and their investigation into how a patient under supposed constant surveillance can just disappear.
As Teddy and Chuck search Ashecliffe and the rest of Shutter Island, what they uncover makes them both begin to fear for their safety and sanity. As a relentless hurricane bears down on the island, the Marshals start to think Shutter Island is not what it seems….radical medical experiments, brutal surgeries and psychological torture seem to be hidden behind the walls of Ashecliffe. Teddy Daniels starts to realize that his escape from Shutter Island, with the new information he has, is becoming more and more unlikely.
I actually finished this book back at the end of June, but I’m only now getting to the review of it. My boys’ baseball schedule for the past few months has kept my reading to a minimum. I’m hoping now that it’s coming to a close, my reading will return back to a more normal (for me) level…so thank you for being patient with my temporary reading slump!
Shutter Island had me both intrigued and creeped out almost from the very beginning! I know this book is about ten years old and that there was a movie made of it, but I have not seen it yet….so I didn’t see the twist coming at all! Throughout the whole book, I couldn’t decide how it would end or who was the villain. Shutter Island is a fantastic mystery/thriller about a mental hospital for the criminally insane that has you questioning everything you know about sanity and reality almost from the get go. If you enjoy a good, creepy mystery/thriller…I highly recommend this one!
My Rating: 5/5 Stars
